Composting has shifted from a niche sustainability practice into the mainstream across the United States. At its core, composting turns food scraps and organic waste into nutrient-rich soil, reducing landfill use and cutting methane emissions, one of the most potent greenhouse gases. As municipalities grapple with rising costs disposal and climate targets, composting has emerged as a practical, scalable strategy that benefits both the environment and local economies.
In recent years, public awareness around food waste has surged. Studies from organizations like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show that food waste makes up a significant portion of municipal solid waste streams. At the same time, states and cities are implementing organic waste diversion laws and zero-waste goals, pushing composting programs from pilot initiatives into permanent public services. What was once limited to a handful of environmentally progressive cities is now expanding into suburbs, smaller towns, and even rural counties.
